Kenilworth, New Jersey, served as the headquarters of the Rahway Valley Railroad, and it was here, at the corner of North 31st Street and the Boulevard, that the railroad’s physical heart gradually took shape. The station, erected in 1899, was the first permanent marker of the line’s presence. In the years that followed, the supporting infrastructure of a working railroad emerged piece by piece: a water tank and coal bunker rose nearby, yard tracks spread outward, and in 1919 an engine house was added to shelter and service the line’s locomotives.
Directly across the street from the station stood the railroad’s original four industrial customers, anchoring what soon developed into a compact but lively industrial district. Together, the station, yard, and surrounding factories formed the operational and economic center of the Rahway Valley Railroad, a place where trains, workers, and industry converged on a daily basis.
